Porto is the famous city in Portugal to get your hands on some delicious port wine however the city offers much more and is a true reflection of its country’s culture. It is arguably the most authentic city in Portugal, bursting with traditional values and stunning architecture. One of the main attractions is the Riverside along the Rua das Flores which is a beautiful spot to grab a coffee and relax amongst the locals. A great time to visit Porto is late June when the São João festival takes place, this has a reputation as being one of the liveliest and busiest street party in Europe.


Saving Money Tips | Porto

Portugal is a cheap and affordable country but here are some smart ways to save money!

  • Get a Uber straight from the airport– Uber is used regularly in Portugal and it is easy to get an Uber from the airport to your destination, this will save you around 5 euro per taxi ride in comparison to a taxi on the street.
  • Drink Deals – In Porto there are some great beers and port wines –  There is happy hour deals such as a pint of beer for 2 euro in almost every street. It is even cheaper to buy a delicious bottle of wine from the supermarket which will cost you around 5 euro.
  • Food deals – Food is cheap in Portugal and the supermarkets are affordable, Pingo Dolce is usually within walking distance and you can get a meal deal here for just 3 euro. The average meal in a restaurant is around 11 euro per person.
  • Hotel with breakfast – The breakfast in Porto is an option if you are staying longer than a few days otherwise it is cheap to grab a coffee and croissant for around 3 euro in a nice spot somewhere along the riverside or in the area you are staying.
  • Fly to Lisbon – It may be cheaper to fly into Lisbon, you can stay the night in Lisbon and head to Porto at your on leisure, the train is around 25 euro and you arrive into the centre of porto in 2.5 hours.

Top Things to do

Ponte de Dom Luis I – This bridge that crosses the Douro River is one of the main attractions of Porto. On one side of the bridge is the city of Porto and in the other, you can find the Port Wine Cellars which you can visit and take a walk along the River Douro.

Porto Hop-On Hop-Off Tour – For around 18 euro you can get the hop on hop off bus which will take you around all the main attractions in Porto at your own leisure. The 2 day ticket  option which includes 6 bridges river trip & port tasting for 28€/head which is a good option for those who like Port.

Bacchus Vini Port and Wine Tasting – Highly recommend visiting this quaint winery for a personal experience and to try fantastic port which are all locally produced. Once you choose your wine or port, the owner comes to your table and explains the history of each bottle, the colours of each and what they mean, and what he prefers about each bottle. This experience is very personal, relaxed and you can truly enjoy at your own pace here. The view across the river is a beautiful way to enjoy your port tasting experience.

Where to eat | Porto

Puorto $ – The famous francesinha dish in Porto is available here, you can choose two delicious large sandwiches with 2 glasses of wine for 22 euro. Cheap and cheerful!

eLeBe Entreparedes $$-$$$ –  Drop by for a spectacular lunch which you can get for 14 euro per person- coffee and water with 3 dishes for 2 people for around 28 euro. The food is good quality and the service is friendly and welcoming.

MUU Steakhouse $$$$ – If you want to experience a beautiful meal with the best service then this is your place.The waiter Miguel has great patience and will explain the menu in detail. The streaks, salads and wines are fantastic. Highly recommended for a great experience.

Where to stay | Porto

Recommended Hotel –Porto Palacio Congress Hotel & Spa $$$$ – As you approach this beautiful 5* hotel you will be welcomed at the entrance by the friendly staff and you can feel the luxurious customer service from the start of your stay. The hotel has a luxurious reception area and 5* service including luggage delivered to your room, guest room service and cleaning twice a day. The hotel is located just 30-40 minute walk from the centre of porto town and there is the option to get a taxi. The coast is also a (45 minutes) walk or taxi (7 minutes), where you can enjoy the pleasant beach. The hotel offers food all day and evening and room service is a treat, ranging from around 15 euro for a starter / main course 20 – 30 euro. The breakfast is highly recommended and is of a very high standard, offering fresh salmon, healthy cereals, eggs, breads and hot food selection. The hotel rooms are luxurious, and extremely comfortable and include a separate bathroom and toilet room, a desk and chair, spa robe and slippers and comfortable bedding. A room with the city/sea view is also highly recommended, one of the best views imaginable from a hotel room. All rooms have access to a fast wifi which is a real bonus for anyone on business. The hotel offers facilities including gym, pool and spa which includes a steam room, shower with different features, indoor swimming pool, hot tub, treatments, relaxation area and a sauna. One of the most spectacular features is the terrace view, you can enjoy a well made cocktail while looking over Porto at sunset, something you have to experience! The staff in the hotel are extremely friendly and welcoming and speak english. A fantastic hotel, definitely worth staying on your trip to Porto.


BessaHotel Boavista $$ – $$$ – Modern, clean and stylish hotel with excellent customer service. This hotel is only a short taxi ride to the centre (aprox €7-8) or a longer walk 50 minutes. Wifi is fast and breakfast has a great choice of food, a great choice for a cheerful stay in Porto.

Oporto House $$ – The staff are very friendly and the location is great here. If you would like a cheaper but still pleasant stay in Porto this is a lovely clean B&B which on quiet season you can get a room here for 33 euro a night.
